Think you have a bumblebee nest?

Quick difference
Honey bee swarm
Usually a large visible cluster of bees hanging together on a branch, fence, shrub or similar.
Bumblebee nest
Usually bees going in and out of one fixed entrance in the ground, a bird box, roof space, compost heap or wall cavity.
What to do if it is a bumblebee nest
Leave it in place if possible
Bumblebee nests are usually best left alone. They are seasonal and often only last a few months.
Give the entrance some space
Keep pets and small children away from the entrance. A temporary barrier a short distance away can help.
Reduce disturbance
Avoid strimming, mowing, digging or creating strong vibration right next to the nest entrance.
Nest near a window?
Fine netting over the window opening can help stop bees coming indoors by mistake.
What not to do
Do not spray them
Avoid insecticides or other attempts to kill them.
Do not block the entrance
Blocking the way in and out is likely to stress the colony and create more problems.
Do not dig the nest up
Bumblebee nests are delicate and are easily damaged.
Do not try a DIY relocation
Most nests are better left where they are unless you are dealing with a removable bird box and following specialist guidance.
If you accidentally disturb the nest
If the nest has been exposed, the simplest approach is usually to gently replace any covering material such as grass, or give it light shelter from the weather, then leave the area alone so the bees can settle.
Could it actually be a honey bee swarm?
More likely honey bees
If you can see a large hanging cluster or ball of hundreds of bees together, that is much more likely to be a honey bee swarm.
More likely bumblebees
If the bees are repeatedly flying in and out of one hidden entrance, that is more likely to be a nest than a swarm.
Useful points
- Bumblebee nests are usually short lived and often last between spring and summer only.
- The nest itself is small and does not cause structural damage.
- Once finished, the nest dries up and is not reused as a colony nest the following year.
